Warrington Town 1 Prescot Cables 2 (aet)
Liverpool Senior Cup 3rd Round
Tuesday 22nd January 2008

The incentive to win this one was great as a semi-final spot against either Liverpool or Everton awaited. The game ebbed and flowed from the off with Prescot making much of the early running. Prescot’s Eamon Price was a thorn in our side all evening with the first of his chances coming when we lost possession. His shot was tipped wide by Shane McWeeney. Shane was called into action minutes later when Price was again put clear before the ball was cleared and Town mounted their first real attack. A long ball to Carl Rendell was chested down into the patch of Mike Owens who hit a powerful shot that was grasped by ex Town stalwart Ritchie Mottram in the Prescott goal. Carl Rendell was next to come close but he dragged his shot wide after receiving a pass from the impressive Martin Bell, making a satisfactory step up from the reserves. The best chance of half fell to Martin. A long clearance from defence dropped beyond the last Prescot defender and was met by Martin running through. With a number of options open he fired first time and unfortunately pulled the chance wide of goal. Eamon Price forced another good save from Shane McWeeney to round off the last of the first half chances.
Town again showed some quality play taking game to Prescot at every opportunity. Carl Rendell forced a good save from Mottram who put the shot out for a corner. The breakthrough came on sixty eight minutes. Town won a free kick wide left. It was fired across the six yard box to far post by Mike Owens where Carl Rendell met it to side foot in at far post. Town then looked to be in control for the next ten minutes but did succumb to an equalizer following a defensive slip. Prescot worked the ball across the edge of the area but Town gained right to clear the line. Instead the ball got stuck under Mike Owens foot and squirmed through to Gavin Lynch who drive could only be parried by McWeeney. Prescot created a couple more chances near end of the ninety minutes, the first being blocked by the Town defence and second saved by McWeeney.
In truth Prescot dominated extra time but made relatively few real chances and none of any note in first period. After the break Carl Rendell and Martin Bell both had shots blocked before some desperate rearguard defending saw us clear a goal bound effort off the line with rebound being saved. The winner came with just four minutes remaining. There was a bit of a scramble in defence with ball eventually falling to Mick Donnell who drove a shot into the top corner of the net. Town came close to forcing the equalizer following a corner but the header drifted just wide. It was a decent performance on a heavy pitch against opposition from a division above us, but in the end we fell just short. A disappointing result that ended our interest in cup football for another season but a performance the deserved some merit.
Town: McWeeney, Everett, Toone (Salt), Spearitt (c), Dunne, C Brown, P Mitchell (Moores), F Smith (Sinker), Rendell, Owens, Bell
Subs not used: Elder, McCormack
